It was a homecoming, a reunion; it was Anita Baker back in Detroit.

Since the announcement of Baker’s performance in Detroit earlier this Spring, there has been growing anticipation of her return back to the Detroit stage. Baker’s last official concert in Detroit was in 1995, and since that time, the songstress has had limited engagements. It was no shock that when tickets went on sale for her one-night-only performance, tickets sold out in minutes.

July 22 will now go down in Detroit history as “Auntie Anita Day,” with the hashtag trending on social media as Detroit geared up for the long-awaited concert. And Baker did not disappoint.

Gracing the stage in an all-sequence jumpsuit and matching shimmered vest — Baker opened with “Same Ole Love” and proceeded into a 90-minute set of her top charting hits:

Sweet Love
Caught Up In The Rapture
No One In The World
Fairy Tales (my personal favorite)
Angel
Giving You The Best That I Got
Closing out with an encore performance of “You Bring Me Joy.”

During her performance, Baker gave mentioned to her band and backup singers, noting that this is not pre-recorded music, “this is live music; everyone up here is playing and singing into the mics.”

In a world of the pre-recorded set list and digitalized music, Baker’s performance and her band were something Motown craved and received with open arms. And the love was felt by Baker, who acknowledged the audience’s screams and applause as one particular fan held up a large sign. In the middle of the concert, Baker asked the fan what did the sign say?

“Oh, it says, will I be your auntie?” Baker exclaimed as she burst into a huge smile, followed by “Yes, I will be your auntie!”
