With so many new faces on this year’s team and in only the third game of the season, it’s not all surprising that Michigan would see turnovers on the higher end. The Wolverines committed six turnovers in the first six minutes of the game, including one on their first possession, on their way to sixteen total in the first half of play. Without question, the Wolverines were the better team however the Horned Frogs were able to score 17 points off those turnovers and they trailed only by three points at halftime.
The bright side is that Michigan calmed down and took care of the ball much better in the second half turning the ball over significantly less with five turnovers after the break. Head Coach Dusty May didn’t seem concerned as he spoke during the post game press conference. He addressed the turnovers saying, “We’re encouraging them to play a lot faster than they’ve ever played. We’re not going to panic, we’re simply going to continue to tighten up and we do feel confident we’ll look back at the end of the year and we’ll have a significant improvement from where we are now”.
As a result of reducing the turnovers in the second half, Michigan scored an additional six points from their first half total and cruised to a twelve point victory in the game.
Nimari Burnett, one of the few returning players wearing Maize and Blue, played one of his best games as a Wolverine leading the team with 16 points in the game. He only missed one shot in the game, going 6 of 7 overall (3 of 4 from behind the three point arc) and added 6 rebounds as well. Transfers Tre Donaldson and Danny Wolf both had 14 points in the game and Wolf had a game high 14 rebounds as well for a double-double.
TCU was led in scoring by Trazarien White, who finished with 16 points, and Brendan Wendell added 15 points in their team’s first loss on the season. Former Wolverine, now Horned Frog, Frankie Collins returned to Crisler Arena and although he didn’t shoot well on the court he used to play on (3 of 12 from the field), he added seven points and led his team in assists with three. Collins transferred away from Michigan to Arizona State after his freshman season, and now as a senior has settled in at TCU.
Michigan (2-1) will stay home for the next game against Miami-OH (2-1) on November 18th at Crisler. TCU (3-1) will travel back to Texas and host Alcorn State (0-4) on November 19th.
Final Score: Michigan 76 – TCU 64
