What happens to a dream deferred? This was the question posed by Playwright Lorraine Hansberry, when she debuted the play, “A Raisin in the Sun.” The narrative explains how the Younger family, a poor multi-generational African American family attempted to improve their circumstances after receiving a life insurance disbursement. Although the family aspired to move beyond segregation and a life of deprivation, instead they got a crash course of housing discrimination, racism and assimilation.
Although this production debuted on Broadway in 1959, some themes from 64 years ago are still present today. Hansbury exposed several pervasive themes within this classic production which included, the resilience of the Black family amid insurmountable barriers, gender roles within the family, generational tensions, class redlining, bigotry and systematic racism.
The Cincinnati Black Theatre Company under the Direction of Donald Sherman, will resurrect this classic exhilarating, thought provoking and award-winning composition. Audiences will board an emotional roller coaster as they reflect back to a time when poverty and inequality was a way of life for most Blacks. However, when this ride is over, the audience learns that deferred dreams can still be a dream come true.
Do yourself a favor. You don’t want to miss this cherished classic.
