In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of service and helping others, more than a dozen employees from United Way joined volunteers from local churches, students from Winston-Salem State University, current and former students, and facility and staff from Carver High School, for a Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 16, which was MLK Day this year.
During the Day of Service, volunteers helped with several school improvement projects such as refreshing flower beds, organizing the school’s Champion “Legacy” store and Family Engagement room, cleaning lockers, sweeping classrooms, and much more.
Tash Lane, United Way’s director of strategic volunteer engagement, said she was excited to see so many volunteers from United Way and throughout the community. The volunteers from United Way had the day off, but decided to spend it at Carver. Lane said the Day of Service was about keeping King’s spirit alive.
“I’m so excited they are here,” Lane said. “They are service oriented individuals and they’re not here because they have to be, they’re here because they want to be. This is a paid vacation day but as we say, this is a day on, not a day off.”
