During Thursday’s (July 21) January 6 hearing, former White House aides shared their extended efforts to persuade President Donald Trump to record a speech condemning rioters and conceding the election the day after the attack on the Capitol.

Never-before-seen outtakes of Trump’s Jan. 7th speech corroborated their testimonies and exposed the former president’s true feelings about the insurrection as he struggled to follow the script given to him.

Video shown to the January 6 House Committee displayed Trump slapping his lectern in frustration as he read his scripted lines.

“I would like to begin by addressing the heinous attack yesterday,” adding, “And to those who broke the law, you will pay,” he read on cue.

However, when prompted to say Capitol rioters “broke the law,” Trump refused.

“‘You do not represent our movement, you do not represent our country. If you broke the law’ — can’t say that,” Trump said as he shook his head. “I’m not going to — I already said ‘you will pay.’”

Trump then offered an assurance that he would continue giving the speech saying, “OK, I’ll do this. I’m going to do this. Let’s go.”

“But this election is now over. Congress has certified the results — I don’t want to say ‘the election’s over,’” he continued. “I just want to say ‘Congress has certified the results’ without saying the election’s over.”

In a video meant to condemn the violence of his supporters, Trump was unable to admit to the election lie that spurred the Capitol riots.
