Tigers Win Homecoming!

October 10, 2023 – Nothing makes for a good celebration like winning your Homecoming football game. For the Tigers of  Edward Waters University (3-3 / 3-2), getting the win over Lane College (1-5 / 1-4) 37-30, keeping the weeklong celebrations in tack before a faithful homecoming crowd at Nathaniel Glover Community Stadium in Jacksonville, FL on Saturday.

The visitors from Jackson, TN opened the game with a sustained 8-play drive behind the running of Kylan Duhe and a couple of Tiger penalties, giving the Dragons a 7-0 lead with 12:32 in the first quarter.

With EWU being unable to move the ball, a fumbled punt return by Lane’s Ryheem Quinney set the Tigers up at the Lane 41-yard line. From there, quarterback Jyron Russell was able to direct EWU with help from running back DeShaun Hugee. After a 12-yard completion to PJ Paulk, Russell was able to score on a 4-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.

In their first drive of the second period, Russell and Hugee again helped get the Tigers in scoring position with their running. EWU took a 10-7 lead on Irving Friedman’s 27-yard field goal.

Looking to get back on the scoreboard, Lane quarterback Polo Solomon was picked off by Vashuan Stockman at the Tiger 25-yard line.

On this drive, Johntarrious Thomas ran the ball effectively on two consecutive plays for 18 yards. On a second down and eleven, Russell found freshman sensation Nathan Rembert racing down the right sideline on an 81-yard score, giving EWU a 17-7 advantage. “Our offense is explosive and don’t believe they can be stopped” said Coach Toriano Morgan.

With their running game giving the Tigers defense trouble much of the day, Duhe and Solomon took turns running the ball, with Jermarkest Banks taking the ball in from the 1-yard line. Nolan Shalz made the PAT, closing the score to 17-14.

Starting another drive at their own 38-yard line, the Tigers used only three plays to score on a 26-yard run off the right side, as they to a 23-14 advantage into halftime.

Taking the kickoff to open the second half, the Tiger’s drive stalled, ending with Friedman punting the ball away, putting Lane deep, and having to start at their own 9-yard line. Once again, it would be the running of Duhe and Banks that would spart the Dragons, as Solomon made critical throws to move into the EWU redzone. With a fourth and one from the EWU 12-yard line, Banks found daylight on the left side and scored, pulling Lane to within two points, 23-21.

Starting at their own 22-yard line, Russell and would find his receiving combo of Rembert, Johnny Jones, to move the team. On a third down and long, Russell once again found Rembert, this time for 41 yards after catch “YAC”, and the score. Friedman was true again with the PAT, making the score 30-21.

Lane would get three points on a Shalz 19-yard field goal at the 8:40 mark, again pulling within one score of the Tigers, 30-24.

The next drive of the quarter, Russell hit Deven Thompson on a 53-yard toss, to give the Tigers a first down at the Lane 24-yard line. On another critical third down, Russell would spot his favorite target on the day and hit Rembert for a 26-yard touchdown.

Undaunted by needing to score again, Lane got the ball with just under six minutes remaining in the game. A 42-yard strike to Jones and a 15-yard run by Duhe, at the 4:39 mark made the score 37-30.

After the next kickoff, Hugee rushed for 25 important yards, as the Russell would use the victory formation to help the Tigers run out the clock and preserve the win! It was the first victory over Lane College in four attempts. “Today’s game was a team effort, and our defense made stops when we needed them most” Coach Morgan said.

Quarterback Jyron Russell finished the game with 305 passing yards and three TDs commented: “Whether it’s Homecoming or not, we are always going to play hard. Salute to the offensive line for picking it up.”

Freshman receiver Nathan Rembert said: “I’m pushed by my coaches and teammates to make plays, and none of this would be possible if not for the man above.” He further commented: “I’ve got a chip on my shoulder because I’m smaller than others, so I gotta do something different, and feel every time I touch the ball, I got to score.”
