Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, 460 Martin Luther King, Boulevard re-opens on Thursday, October 20, 2022. The hours of operation are Thursday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm, until further notice. The Museum has been undergoing a year of Exhibit Enhancements. The Museum’s Executive Director Vaughnette Goode – Walker said, “We are excited to welcome the Savannah Community through these doors to celebrate Savannah’s Civil Rights History and will announce “free family events” for the community in the coming months.” She also outlined the Museum’s new Exhibit stories, “The Lower Level is now dedicated to the Heroes and Sheroes of Savannah’s Civil Rights Movement. The Museum’s second floor has the a new look in the West Broad Street Room and the Mayfield – Williams Room has the Frederick C. Baldwin Photos, on view, donated by the Mayfield Family.”

The Museum held a Pre-Opening event on Saturday, October 15th for the families of Savannah Civil Rights Movement. Among the attendees were members of the Earl T. Shinhoster Family to view the new exhibit, on the second floor, about his life in the Civil Rights Movement. Chauncey Mayfield, son of Attorney Mayfield, Dr. Barbara Williams Emerson, daughter of Hosea Williams to open the Mayfield – Williams Room and Greer Gadsden Larned, daughter of Judge Eugene Gadsden and her family.
