The Heart Dept: New Black-Owned Wellness Space in L.A’s Arts District

The Heart Department is a new wellness space opening September 2022 in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles.

The space will be home for the beauty, medicine and power of US, founded by Artist Shelley Bruce who is a poet, painter, community organizer and native of L.A.

How many businesses are there in the DTLA Arts District, owned by individuals who are women, queer & BIPOC?

Not many!

And Bruce has just been offered the opportunity of a lifetime–to manage a building that can operate as a community wellness space.

Lovingly named “The Heart Department,” Bruce has been entrusted to manage and run the 2022 lease of a beautiful 6,500 sq ft loft in the DTLA Arts District, after working with the previous owners for the last year.

“We have learned that when we lead from OUR perspective, things move. With our investors, sponsors, community partners and more, we are making a massive dream come true.” Shelley Bruce

This gorgeous, historic loft, has hardwood flooring, exposed brick walls, as well as a baby grand piano.

Lush plants are adorned in ample, natural-lighting with striking artwork. The venue has already proven to be a valuable mixed-use space.

And even more exciting, the space is now headquarters for Bruce’s grassroots org, Day of Healing, where they will offer FREE health & wellness services.

Bruce and her team are currently running a campaign to complete their fundraising goal, so they are able to move in and offer wellness services to the community.

“This charity and business model has already proven to create immense value for BIPOC communities –a historically displaced group in Los Angeles. Access to physical, affordable spaces is paramount for us.” Shelley Bruce

The Heart Department is launching a profit share and community service model for the project, to produce wealth and serve as a community gathering center for all things wellness.
