The Kansas City Defender is thrilled to announce that our Managing Editor, Nasir Anthony Montalvo, has been selected as one of the ten fellows for the prestigious Journalists of Color Fellowship by the Solutions Journalism Network. This opportunity is a testament to Nasir’s unwavering commitment to Black liberation and innovative editorial philosophy.

Nasir’s selection into this fellowship is a significant achievement in a time when the need for diverse voices in media leadership is more critical than ever. This 9-month program is designed to fortify next-generation leaders with solutions journalism, leadership training, mentorship, and a community of practice, addressing the most pressing social issues of our time.

At The Kansas City Defender, Nasir has been instrumental in creating systems and processes for our newly formed abolitionist news outlet. Their work in engaging young, local Black writers and fundraising has been pivotal in our journey.

Nasir’s passion extends beyond our organization, as evident in their archival project {B/qKC} – unearthing Black LGBTQIA2S+ history in Kansas City, recently recognized with grants from the University of Kansas and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Nasir’s journey from Kissimmee, Florida, to becoming a polymathic force for change is an inspiration. A graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, Nasir has used their education and experience to combat oppression. From founding their university’s first safe space for marginalized community members to leading critical protest efforts, their impact has been profound and far-reaching.

Their work and advocacy have not only enriched The Kansas City Defender but have also garnered national attention, with features in The Advocate, GLAAD, Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, NPR, and more. Nasir’s queer, Boricua identity fuels their dedication to creating a media landscape where all voices are heard and respected.

As Nasir embarks on both fellowships, we recognize the immense value they bring not only to our team but to the broader media and organizing communities. We are confident that these experiences will further amplify their ability to effect radical change and continue their legacy of advocating for justice and love.

Please join us in congratulating Nasir on this incredible achievement. We are excited to see how their journey through the Journalists of Color Fellowship will unfold and the remarkable impacts it will have on our community and beyond.
