The Chicago Defender Official 2023 #SummerTimeChi Calendar

We’ve added more events.

No other term captures the vibe, energy or essence of Chicago in the Summer like #SummerTimeChi, coined by native son Kanye West. Speaking of which, our #SummerTimeChi calendar is the source for all things fun happening in and around the city this season.

Below is a list of Summer events we are eagerly anticipating:

July

Festival of the Lakes featuring Lil Wayne (July 12-16)

Yes, Lil Wayne will be the Saturday headliner for this annual festival in Hammond, which is five days of pure joy and entertainment. Northwest Indiana is in the building!

Campfire Music Festival (July 14-16)

Expect a fun-filled adult “glamping” experience just 45 minutes from Chicago’s Southside. And by “glamping” we mean “glamorous luxurious camping” during this three-day festival featuring some of the city’s best musicians and DJs.

Chicago Latin Jazz Festival (July 14, 15)

You are advised to bring your lawn chairs and picnics for this free, family-friendly fest at the Humboldt Park Fieldhouse that showcases acclaimed Latin Jazz musicians. This year’s event features De La Buena, Tito Carrillo and Marlon Simon. So act accordingly.

Pier 31 Restaurant (July 14-16)

Pier 31 Restaurant and the adjoining 31st Street Beach will be the central headquarters for old school Hip-hop, R&B, reggae, house and more all summer. So, join the movement and breeze through.

Bronzeville Summer Nights ’23 (July 14)

“The sounds, tastes, and magic” of one of Chicago’s most historic neighborhoods are on display, along with its local businesses. This event is the first of three Bronzeville Summer Nights events, with two more coming on August 11 and September 8.

Double Dutch Fest 2023 (July 15)

This annual Faith in Place event at Rainbow Beach is about connecting to nature and participating in the legendary game of Double Dutch. Family events don’t get much better or more wholesome than this.

Taste of Chicago Pullman Park (July 15)

This gathering is different from the regular Taste of Chicago festival, which is coming in September. But the spirit of that fest remains the same – showcasing the best eats and live entertainment from this gem of a neighborhood.

An Evening With Eric Roberson And Chrisette Michele (July 15)

This concert at the Country Club Hills Amphitheater promises to be a feast for the ears. It would be unfair to call these revered R&B artists “underground” because real heads know that Roberson and Michele have great songs and the goods to bring it.

Hyde Park Handmade Artisan Bazaar (July 16)

Some of the most creative artisans and food makers will sell their goods and wares at this fun and festive market at The Promontory’s second-floor lounge. DJ Sean Alvarez is slated to provide the sounds.

Sundays on State (July 16)

They call this the most iconic block party Chicago has ever seen. We’re confident that Sundays on State, happening this Sunday and on August 13, has a strong argument. The food, music, art, vendors and “people watching” make this block party a must.

Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour (July 22-23)

Does anything even need to be said? It’s the biggest show of the year. And while we don’t recommend using your rent or mortgage money to buy tickets, we certainly understand. This event is as close to a once-in-a-lifetime concert as it gets.

Millennium Park Summer Film Series — Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (July 25)

The sequel to Black Panther gets the outdoor treatment at Millennium Park on a 40-foot screen. This is the perfect event for the little ones.

Deon Cole at Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana (June 29)

This is basically a homecoming for one of the most accomplished comedians around. Cole is truly Chicago’s own and few of the new guys have reached his level of stardom. Plus, dude is hilarious.

18th Annual Silver Room Sound System Block Party 2023 (July 29-30)

This multigenerational block party has always been a Chicago summer staple. Expect more of the same for this year’s edition, which takes place at Oakwood Beach — beautiful people, fantastic live music, great food and really swell energy.

Bantu Fest 2023 (July 29-31)

Another summertime destination for Black Chicagoans. This event brings together people from 30 countries to the Midway Plaisance for a celebration of love, unity, music and fun. You have to get in on this one.

August

Lollapalooza 2023 (August 3-6)

One of the world’s largest music festivals is back in Chicago, proving there is no such thing as too much music. With 170 bands from around the world performing on nine stages, the amount of music that will be at Grant Park is absolutely mind boggling. Here are the featured Lolla artists who really have our attention: Kendrick Lamar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pusha T, Tems, Lil Yachty, Billie Eilish and J.I.D.

The Bud Billiken® Parade (August 12)

The largest African-American parade in the nation is back for its 94th year. As always, the procession of bands and floats down King Drive will be a celebration of Black youth and an affirmation of family. It really doesn’t get any better or stronger than that!

My House Music Festival 2023 (August 12-13)

Let this serve as your official save the date for this bubbling house music festival. More details about My House will be made known in the coming weeks.

Chicago Caribbean Carnival (August 19)

My peoples from the West Indies continually represent at this lovely, celebratory event that occurs every year at the Midway Plaisance. Be prepared to be enthralled by the music, dancing and pure joy that the Caribbean Carnival brings.

Musiq Soulchild live at City Winery Chicago (August 28-September 1)

If there are two things that Musiq Soulchild has it’s hits and bops. An entire bag of them. Thankfully, Chicagoans can get their fill when he performs eight shows over four nights at City Winery.

All Summer Long

Jazzin’ at the Shedd

Live jazz is the ultimate elixir for the mid-week blues. That’s what this Shedd Aquarium event brings you every Wednesday throughout the summer. Jazzin’ lasts from June 7 – August 30, from 5 – 10pm.

Millennium Park Summer Film Series

Not many experiences can top watching a great movie outdoors with loved ones as the Lake Michigan summer breezes caress the skin. Those are the vibes of the Millennium Park Summer Film Series.  Here’s what’s even better — it’s free! Fan favorites that will get the outdoor treatment at the Jay Pritzker Pavillion include Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Summer of Soul, Top Gun: Maverick, and Barbershop, among others. The Summer Film Series runs every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. from July 11-August 29.

Millennium Park Summer Music Series

Critically-acclaimed musicians from every corner of earth are featured during the Millennium Park Summer Music Series, which occurs Mondays and Thursdays from June 22 – August 21 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. This year’s lineup features notable acts like Stephen Marley, Big Freedia, Shemekia Copeland and PJ Morton.

Pier 31 Restaurant

Seven days a week, all summer long, Pier 31 Restaurant and the adjoining 31st Street Beach will be central headquarters for live entertainment. So breeze through.

Ravinia Festival

This summer outdoor music series in Highland Park is an institution. Every year, Ravinia offers something for everyone. Notable acts playing this summer include Santana, The Isley Brothers, Boyz II Men, Lauryn Hill, Buddy Guy, George Benson, John Legend and Ne-Yo.

South Shore Social Beach Club

The South Shore Social Beach Club is popping all summer long, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The venue’s House Music Fridays is a must, along with its various events and parties. The club is also serving up tasty food and cocktails. In essence, it’s all about the beats and eats.
