Kansas City, Missouri – Earlier this week, tenants of Quality Hill Towers were facing extreme temperatures as some residents had no heat to offset the fall chill and others endured temperatures near triple digits.
According to an instagram post shared by KC Tenants, Tenants at Quality Hill Towers building 929 were experiencing extreme indoor heat and temperatures reached over 85°F. Tenants in building 817 were reportedly dealing with no heat as seasonal temperatures continue to drop.
Last month, KC Tenants made history by launching its first ever rent strike. The strike is a coordinated national campaign aimed at federally-financed properties and the demand for national rent caps. These rent strikes represent the first time efforts have been targeted at the Federal Housing Finance Authority.
As of yesterday, the heat in building 817 was turned on and temperatures in building 929 are starting to cool down. However, six floors in building 817 started to flood. In a video shared by KC Tenants, water can be seen dripping from the ceiling and light fixture.
Quality HIll Towers–owned by Sentinel Real Estate Corporation–has a documented history of deplorable living conditions. Sentinel Real Estate Corporation was also under fire for deregulating a bevy of apartments in New York and conducting illegal and inflated rent increases. Those apartments were later re-regulated and back on the affordable housing market as of this past September.
As KC Tenants continue their historic rent strike, they will also host a community solidarity picket this Friday at Quality Hills starting at 5:00pm.
This is a developing story.
