Say His Name — Horror movie ‘Candyman’ directed by Black woman, tops U.S. box office

The director of the 1992 classic film, Candyman, did it big over this past weekend with the film gaining popularity with raking in $20.4 million – just in its weekend opening.

The rough amount of tickets sold came to $22,370,000, which overwhelmed the expectation of the near $15 million figure, according to ESSENCE Magazine.

The film even did better than Free GuyPaw Patrol: The MovieDisney’s Jungle CruiseDon’t Breathe 2 and The Suicide Squad together, putting DaCosta in a league of all her own, as she is the first-ever Black female director to have a movie at No. 1 at the domestic box office, according to the article.
