The Savannah African Art Museum will hold its third annual Juneteenth Celebration from 11 AM – 4 PM Saturday, June 17, 2023, on the museum grounds, at 201 E. 37 St. The festivities will reflect on and honor the past while celebrating the future. This event will feature music and dancing, spoken word performances, a marketplace, African food samples, info/resource tables and more. The event is free and open to the community; donations are welcomed and appreciated.

Some of the activities and attractions Juneteenth attendees can expect to enjoy includes tours of the museum’s West African Collection of African Art, The Gullah Geechee Ring Shouters, The Deep Slam Team, Storytelling by J’Miah Nabawi, Zumba with Mai, oral presentation & liturgical Dance by the Youth of St. Paul CME Church, history sharing, taste of traditional African food, craft activity tables, etc. African & African-centered art & items will be for sale by vendors e.g., Diaspora Marketplace, Ghanaian artist William Kwamena-Poh and other local vendors with art and unique handmade items. Contemporary artists from Osogbo, a small city in Southwestern Nigeria will also be present with art for sale.

An overall Juneteenth theme is “Sankofa,” an African word from the Akan people in Ghana. The literal translation is, “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind” – they believe in honoring the past to embrace the future. The Akan people believe wisdom is derived from creating a robust knowledge of the past. The Museum’s theme for this year’s celebration is “Planting Seeds.” In the spirit of Sankofa, we honor and celebrate the wisdom, history, culture, and traditions of the ancestors and pass these seeds on to the current and the generations to come. To assist in accomplishing this, the Savannah African Art Museum invites the public to celebrate Juneteenth as the museum exhibits African roots, Gullah Geechee Roots and makes its world history connections through music, art, food, dance, praise, storytelling and more.

“Juneteenth marks a day of remembering and honoring the past, celebrating and enjoying the progress and planting seeds for the future,” said Savannah African Art Museum Education and Community Outreach Liaison Lisa Jackson. “We look forward to the community joining us to celebrate, enjoy the festivities, experience our collection and fellowship with old and new friends.”

The celebration has expanded to the parking lot this year, so the museum will not have any parking available on the premises. There will be limited priority seating available on a first come basis for seniors and disabled members of our community. All are welcome to bring their folding chairs. This is a family-friendly event so the consumption and possession of alcohol is prohibited.
