Same Guns Being Used In Different Shootings

The recurring issue of guns being used in multiple shootings is a grave concern. Multiple shootings can also include mass shootings or spree killings which also involve the use of firearms to inflict harm on a significant number of people in a single incident. This summer, Seattle saw three mass shootings: one in Capitol Hill during an illegal street racing event; outside a Safeway in Rainier Beach; at a Hookah Lounge in South Seattle.

Implementing effective security measures at public venues and institutions can help deter potential shooters and minimize casualties in the event of an attack. More than 700 guns have been recovered by the police. They are each tested. The shell casings are sent to the police department’s crime lab as well. They are looking to link shooting scenes where the same gun is used over and over.

Media coverage of mass shootings can inadvertently contribute to the problem by inspiring copycat incidents. Extensive media attention can glorify the perpetrators and their actions, potentially incentivizing others. There are many shootings and testing helps solve other crimes. Once there is a match likely linking two crime scenes to the same gun tested, that lead is then sent to detectives and prosecutors.

“We’re averaging a little over 300 cases this year so far that have been used in two cases or more. We recovered 115 of those guns that have been used in two or more cases,” said Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz.

Cultural factors, societal influences, and personal grievances can play a role in motivating individuals to carry out multiple shootings. These factors may include extremist ideologies, personal vendettas, or a desire for notoriety. More than 100 guns have been connected to multiple crime scenes in Seattle this year.
