The rededication of a national Negro league stadium will be held this afternoon in honor of Juneteenth.
This year’s Juneteenth Celebration is set at 1 p.m. on Monday June 20, and will feature the rededication of the historic Hamtramck Stadium, one of only five National Negro league stadiums still standing.
Built in 1930, the former jewel of the city has received its well-deserved and long overdue polishing with the completion of a 2.6 million dollar seating restoration after several decades of neglect.
The Juneteenth event will also honor Negro League player Coach Ron Teasley Sr.. with a game showcasing the Chicago American Giants vs. the Detroit Stars at 2:00 pm. Guests are invited to participate in a postgame afterglow on the field from 4:15-6:00 pm, and are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, food and refreshments. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
The event will feature presentations from Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Hamtramck state, county and local officials, representatives from Detroit Tigers, soprano soloist Nicole Joseph of the Detroit Opera Theatre, and Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield who will present the Spirit of Detroit Award to Coach Ron Teasley Sr. Platinum music producer and DJ Nick Speed will provide music for the festivities. Hamtramck residents and the general public are invited to attend. There is no cost for attendance.
The Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium (FHHS) is working to provide a vital community resource and recreational asset where future stars can shine bright once again and to ensure its future through educational, cultural and recreational programming honoring the history of Negro League Baseball and amateur sports in Hamtramck and Detroit.
The Hamtramck Parks Conservancy (HPC) is a collaboration between the city, public schools, and community partners seeking to improve green spaces and facilities for public use and to provide health, educational and recreational opportunities for city residents.
The Historic Hamtramck Norman “Turkey Stearnes” Field is located at 3201 Dan Street in Hamtramck, Michigan.
