Pre-Juneteenth Screening of Award-Winning Documentary “Summer of Soul” Set

In partnership with Motown Museum, a free outdoor movie screening kicks off the celebrations ahead of the Juneteenth holiday and day of recognition on Sunday, June 19.

The Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) is partnering with the Motown Museum for a pre-Juneteenth screening of “Summer of Soul,” the Oscar Award winning 2021 documentary film directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson about the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which celebrated African American music and culture and promoted Black pride and unity.

“Questlove is a brilliant musician and as we learned on his visit to Motown Museum in 2018, he is also an avid collector and music historian,” said Robin Terry, chairwoman and CEO of Motown Museum. “This captivating documentary ‘Summer of Soul’ is a wonderful expression of his passion for music and gift for storytelling. We’re thrilled to celebrate Questlove’s success by sharing this extraordinary Oscar winning film with the Detroit community.”

The showing takes place Thursday, June 16, and attendees are encouraged to arrive by 6 p.m. for special themed activities, including music and a special pre-movie video courtesy of the Motown Museum. Attendees who arrive early will have a chance to score some free giveaways and goodies and two lucky winners will receive VIP swag bags provided by DDP, Capital One Café and the Motown Museum.

This is a part of the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) returning Movie Nights in the D lineup, a free outdoor movie series featuring exceptional films on the big screen at Campus Martius Park every Thursday through August.

Moviegoers are welcome to bring a chair or blanket to spread out on the lawn for a relaxing, entertaining summer evening under the stars in the award-winning downtown Detroit park.
