Over the years, this newspaper has been a consistent supporter of Van R. Johnson in his campaigns for elective offices. We endorsed his bid for Alderman and his re-election campaigns for that position.
Further, we were a strong supporter for his bid to become Mayor in 2019, and he has clearly lived up to our expectations. He has been an outstanding Mayor of Savannah.
Mayor Johnson led Savannah through the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, and followed the advice of scientists to protect the citizens of Savannah, even in opposition to other powerful citizens and politicians. In every aspect of City leadership, he has distinguished himself as an energetic advocate for the concerns of the residents of Savannah, and has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments during his first term as Mayor. His goals have been both lofty and strategic. We especially applaud him for working to make Savannah more sustainable, increasing the use of minority-owned businesses by the City, and his efforts to create more affordable housing. However, this year, the leading issue in this election is the desire to have a Mayor and other members of City Council who will work together as a team. This is key, if real progress is to be made in Savannah, and Van R. Johnson has the experience and personal traits to lead us forward.
Johnson is a Savannah State University graduate, and has earned his master’s. He has always been thoroughly involved in civic and community life. He has the ability to work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and has provided inspirational leadership for many individuals, including the students who have participated in the Chatham County Youth Commission and the Savannah Youth Council.
As Mayor, Johnson has demonstrated intelligence, tenacity, integrity, and professionalism. He has achieved a level of experience that makes him a very influential representative for all of the citizens of Savannah. He has earned the respect of other local, state, national and international leaders.
We, at The Savannah Tribune, believe that Van Johnson deserves our support. It would be a mistake for the people of Savannah, if we do not elect the best qualified candidate as our mayor. Thus, we urge our readers to Re-Elect Mayor Van Johnson.
