The O’Dea Fighting Irish, the number three seed in the WIAA 3A state football tournament round of 32, found themselves matched up against Edmonds-Woodway (5-5), who finished third in the 3A Wesco league.

The Fighting Irish (7-1) came into the game looking to extend their three-game win streak and more importantly advance to the next round.

During their win streak, O’Dea averaged 37 points per game and looked to continue that effort against Edmonds-Woodway.

After receiving the first possession of the game, O’Dea’s offense looked to set the tone early with their rushing attack. Led by running back Jason Brown, Jr, the Fighting Irish would move the chains down the field into the redzone, where quarterback Luke D’Anna would run in for a 10-yard touchdown to give O’Dea a 7-0 lead.

O’Dea’s successful opening drive put the momentum in their favor for the remainder of the game. Their defense across the board contained an Edmonds-Woodway team by forcing incomplete passes, stopping them in the backfield, and forcing turnovers on downs and punts.

With their defense stagnating the Warriors offense, the Fighting Irish would capitalize off of good field position. D’Anna would throw a screen pass to Brown and 30 yards later he was in the endzone, giving O’Dea a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Edmonds-Woodway had no answer for O’Dea as they gave up 21 unanswered points. Rasaan Thomas ran for a 15-yard touchdown. The O’Dea’s special teams would block a punt putting them on the 15-yard line and two plays later Brown ran for two yards to score his second touchdown of the game, and with a minute left before halftime D’Anna thew a 10-yard pass to Zander Turner as The Fighting Irish opened up a 35-6 lead going into halftime.

Going into the second half with a 29-point advantage, O’Dea kept their foot on the gas as D’Anna and Brown couldn’t be stopped. D’Anna would run for 10 yards to secure his third touchdown of the game, and Brown would run for a 20-yard touchdown and return a kickoff 84 yards to record his fourth touchdown on the day. Altogether, the quarterback and running back duo combined for seven touchdowns as O’Dea earned a 56-20 win over Edmonds-Woodway.

With the win, O’Dea improved to 8-1 and earned themselves a spot in the round of sixteen.
