Ahead of the midterm election, The NAACP is partnering with Vote.org to register and mobilize Black voters. In addition, Texas NAACP is organizing a political summit in order to train and mobilize Black male voters specifically.
“Black males have one of the lowest voting turnouts as a demographic,” says Dallas Council Member Casey Thomas. He is organizing the summit which takes place next month. “We want to make sure to educate Black men on the importance of voting and help them get other Black males to vote,” Thomas stated.
The event will have grassroots organizers and speakers knowledgeable on key voting matters such as where and how to register to vote and finding out which representatives are running.
“There will be special emphasis in targeted states, because the barriers to access and capital effectiveness has been high,” NAACP President Derrick Johnson told NBC News. “But overall, we want individuals to be involved [and] engaged. We want to increase the number of people who are voting and not allow those seeking to limit access to voting to succeed.”
Vote.org staffers will begin training NAACP chapters on how to use the site to check registrations. They will also be prep for finding polling locations, requesting mail in ballots and notifying young voters to register on their 18th birthdays.
Mobilizing the Black Male Vote for 2022 and Beyond will be held Wednesday, July 13 at For Oak Cliff headquarters at 907 E Ledbetter Drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The summit will provide resources and tools for men who want to learn about organizing and educating others in preparation for the midterm election.
