In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, the Motor City Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, alongside Teen HYPE, invites the community to Motor City Rise: A Celebration of Self & Community. This immersive wellness experience will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Williams Recreation Center, located at 8431 Rosa Parks Blvd in Detroit.
The event celebrates Dr. King’s enduring vision of a beloved community that focuses on wellness, empowerment, and self-care. Attendees will be able to participate in a range of services designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit, fostering collective healing and cultural pride.
Ambra Redrick, CEO of Teen HYPE, highlighted that this MLK Day celebration represents more than just a day of service; it is a testament to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community through wellness and interpersonal care.
“When we come together to support each other’s well-being, we honor his legacy of creating positive change from within our communities,” Redrick said.
“Participants will experience the power of collective healing and leave with practical tools for self-care and community building – exactly the kind of grassroots empowerment Dr. King championed.”
The free event aims to foster a nurturing environment and encourage deeper connections within the community. Various wellness stations will provide opportunities for attendees to explore self-care techniques and engage with local professionals, all while celebrating the cultural impact of Dr. King’s work.
Dr. Sherida DuBose Parsons, MD, President of the Motor City Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, is excited to invite the community to what promises to be a multi-layered, transformative day of collective healing, reflection, empowerment, and self-care.
“This day of service and celebration embodies Dr. King’s vision and is a testament to living a faith-filled life,” Parsons said.
“We look forward to welcoming and embracing the community on Saturday. There will be something for everyone in an atmosphere designed to nurture and promote inner peace and well-being.”
Wellness Experiences Include:
The Royal Treatment (Crown Club): Professional haircuts, natural hair workshops, and take-home care packages.
Style & Dignity Boutique: Personal styling, interview attire, and a “fill-a-bag” dignity shopping experience.
Radiance Revival (Glow): Skincare consultations, hand treatments, and wellness guides.
A Healing-Centered Engagement: Hydration education, vision board creation, guided meditation, and sound healing.
The event will also feature live DJ music, yoga sessions, youth performances, and healthy snacks. For children, Jauwana Sims, Teen HYPE’s Adolescent Wellness Specialist, will read Umoja Dreams, a children’s book she illustrated, highlighting Dr. King’s empowering legacy.
This celebration of wellness, empowerment, and community healing promises to be a meaningful and transformative experience as participants come together to honor Dr. King’s vision of collective uplift and transformation through self-care and communal support.
