Over the years the Ministers’ Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships to deserving high school students headed to college. The Ministers’ Conference added to that number last week at Hanes Memorial CME Church where they recognized the 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship recipients.

This year’s scholarship recipients were: Tyshawn Campbell, Trenton Dozier, Jordan Martin, Sterling McIntosh, Gabriel Phipher, Danielle Sanders, Shaniyae Simmons, and Elias Thomas.

At a time when college tuition is at an all time high, scholarships and grants are more important than ever and the Ministers’ Conference is doing their part to make sure local students have the opportunity to further their education beyond high school. Funds for the MCWSV Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships are donated by member churches and the annual Martin Luther King Jr. service where they take a special collection for the scholarships.

To be eligible for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award, applicants must belong to a church that is an active contributor to the MLK Scholarship Fund, involved in church, civic, community, and school extracurricular activities, and have at least a 2.0 GPA.

According to the Ministers’ Conference website, students can use the scholarship funds to buy books, pay for transportation and other education essentials.

After being recognized during the ceremony, Joran Martin, who will be attending N.C. Central University, thanked her parents and the Ministers’ Conference.  Martin will major in pharmaceutical sciences and plans on becoming a pharmacist.

“I want to thank everybody. I want to thank the Ministers’ Conference and my parents and my grandmothers because it wasn’t easy,” Martin said.

The keynote address during the Scholarship Award celebration was delivered by Dr. Raphael Hughes, who serves as assistant principal at North Forsyth High School.

Speaking to those in attendance at Hanes Memorial last Thursday evening, Hughes, who is also a product of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS), encouraged the students in attendance to follow their dreams and keep a close relationship with God. She said, “Although it may be lonely at the top, you are never alone.

“We serve a God that will never leave you nor forsake you. He will equip you, he will strengthen you, he will guide you, he will provide for you, and he will elevate you beyond your wildest dreams.”
