Mayor Johnson Names Ashanti Hamilton as Violence Prevention Director

MILWAUKEE— Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced today that he has named Ashanti Hamilton to lead Milwaukee’s Office of Violence Prevention.

Hamilton currently serves as a Common Council member representing the First Aldermanic District, a position he has held since 2004. He is the Chairperson of the Judiciary & Legislation Committee and previously served as Council President.

“For Ashanti, making our city safer is a long-standing effort.  He knows Milwaukee’s residents; he knows the people most affected by violence; and, he’s is dedicated to making a positive difference,” Mayor Johnson said. “He understands the need for results – tangible metrics that show we are making Milwaukee safer.”

Hamilton said he is excited to take on this new responsibility.

“We do understand the statistics reflecting the high murder rate the City of Milwaukee is facing right now,” Hamilton said. “Violence is a public health issue, and our approaches to solving violence in our community has to continue with that approach.”

Hamilton will formally resign from his position as a Common Council member when he assumes the position of Violence Reduction & Prevention Program Director later this month.

He is a graduate of Riverside High School in Milwaukee, Marquette University, and the Thurgood Marshall Law School at Texas Southern University.
