The National Association of Black Journalist will be presenting a special honor to one of the first Tulsans to be recognized by the national organization.
Gary Lee, managing editor of The Oklahoma Eagle, is to receive the Journalist of Distinction honor at NABJ’s national convention in Chicago, July 31 – Aug. 4.
NABJ said, “This award recognizes a Black journalist in broadcast markets 1-16 and print/digital circulation under 150,000, who has distinguished themselves with a body of work, a story, series or photographs published in print, digital or aired that was extraordinary in depth, scope or significance to people in the African Diaspora.
“Lee previously served as a staff writer for TIME magazine and a correspondent for The Washington Post. He was deputy chief of TIME’s Bureau in Germany and chief of The Washington Post Bureau in Moscow. In 2021, he was named managing editor of the award-winning The Oklahoma Eagle, one of the oldest U.S. Black newspapers.”
Lee will be one of more than a dozen to be recognized. According to NABJ, the candidates were selected “for their groundbreaking accomplishments and work to support the Black community in the media.” Others to be acknowledged are Michelle V. Agins, Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award; Rodney Carmichael and Sidney Madden, Journalist of the Year Award; Dr. Ava Thompson Greenwell, Journalism Educator of the Year Award; Tenikka Smith Hughes, Angelo B. Henderson Community Service Award; Roy Lewis, Legacy Award; Damaso Reyes, Ida B. Wells Award; Corey Antonio Rose, Michael J. Feeney Emerging Journalist of the Year Award; Kimberley and David Rudd, Patricia “Pat” L. Tobin Media Professional Award; Domonique Tolliver, Student Journalist of the Year Award; and the Staff of Capital B, Best Practices Award.
Additional awards will be given to one of the following: NABJ-South Florida, New York Association of Black Journalists, or NABJ-St. Louis for Professional Chapter of the Year Award; and to individuals and organizations for the President’s Award; Student Chapter of the Year Award; and the Thumbs-Down Award.
Former Tulsan Roy Johnson, columnist and director of content development for the Alabama Media Group/AL.com, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023-2024 and was co-chair of the 2023 convention in Birmingham, Ala.
