Leave your mark

As Black History Month ends, I wanted to share with you a little more about our history. We have made some major changes in the last few years, and we have had a few more victories in the justice system. Black owned businesses are growing and thriving and more opportunities in television and other media outlets are booming.

I have also seen personal growth in communities as far as housing and education. The opportunities are there, and we must be intentional about getting our fair share. Also remember that we own part of this world we help build, so we must have the confidence and determination to do something about it.

Another way to get involved in the community is by networking and supporting black owned businesses and organizations. You can donate your time and purchase items, but you can also seek mentoring opportunities from those that have already been successful in reaching their goals, and by attending workshops and other events lead by black educators.

This weekend I had the pleasure of visiting the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum at 2620 W. Center Street, and I must say this was an incredible experience. The founding director Clayborn Benson III established the WBHSM in 1987 which displays exhibits of the history of African Americans in Milwaukee.

During my visit, I talked with Director Jamila Benson and Executive Director Clayborn Benson about the history of WBHSM and I received some insightful information about the exhibits and artifacts from them. You must take some time to visit this amazing museum and learn about our history. Here are a couple of their upcoming events.

Tuesday, February 28th at 6pm – 7:30 pm, Clayborn Benson, the Executive Director of WBHSM will be speaking at the Milwaukee Public Library, at 2727 W. Fond Du Lac Ave.

Saturday, March 4th 9:30AM – 12PM Archives Day, a day to share your stories, pictures, artifacts and knowledge with their skilled archival team and volunteers.

As we continue to celebrate Black History month, be encouraged, stay informed, never forget your history, and continue to soar!
