According the 1st Ward Flint City Councilman Eric Mays, lawyers from the Lento Law Group approached him after watching videos of council meetings. As a result, Mays’ lawyers allegedly sent five council members cease-and-desist orders.

Mays’ lawyer allegedly sent cease-and-desist letters to five Flint City Council members.

The letters allege 2nd Ward Councilwoman Ladel Lewis, 4th Ward Councilwoman Judy Priestley,  7th Councilwoman Allie Herkenroder, 8th Ward Councilman Dennis Pfeiffer and 9th Ward Councilwoman Eva Worthing “repeatedly and flagrantly violated the constitutional rights” of Mays. In addition, the letters allege the council members violated council rules. The letters allege the five council members have censored, stifled and suppressed Mays during open meetings, as well as refused to allow him to enter council meeting chambers.

Each of the council members who were sent the letters routinely act as chairs of council committees and have been able to rule Mays out of order. They deny the allegations against them, with Lewis also being a Black council member.

The letters request the councilmembers permit Mays to freely participate in council meetings and say further legal action will be taken if needed.

A Genesee County District Court recently found Mays guilty of having been disorderly at a meeting last April. He is scheduled to be sentenced in April.
