Los Angeles, CA–Mikeona Johnson should have celebrated her 26th birthday last weekend, but her family and two young daughters continue to have questions surrounding her disappearance and death.

Her family would never hear from her again. They hit the streets to look for Johnson putting up fliers, and holding press conferences about her disappearance.
A week after she went missing, Johnson’s body was found inside her 2003 silver Mercedes, near Manhattan Place Elementary School.
Not only have law enforcement failed in doing investigative work leading to the arrest of those involved in Johnson’s death, they prematurely closed her case 6 months into the investigation.
Johnson’s mother and family had to hold a press conference, pleading with L.A District Attorney George Gascon to open back up Johnson’s investigation.
Her mother relayed she has been in contact with police since that press conference but her case remains unsolved.
It was determined by detectives that Johnson died the day she went missing but her cause of death is currently listed as “undetermined.”
Her toxicology report showed no drugs or alcohol.
Following Johnson’s death, 16-year-old Tioni Theus was killed and thrown out a vehicle on the on-ramp of the 110 freeway in South Central. Her case also remains unsolved.
A year ago today, I was interviewed about the death of Theus by The Guardian, and spoke on the issues of media coverage surrounding Black women and girls from the inner city.
One of the main things I discussed was the fact that the larger society view women in marginalized communities as disposable, which also reflects the lack of concern by police to solve our cases.
Murder and domestic violence cases of Black women rose during the pandemic, as well as the number of unsolved cases.
