After 53 years of being jointly operated by Indiana University and Purdue University, IUPUI will be split between the two institutions.
According to the agreement, Indiana University will take control of the schools of liberal arts, education, philanthropy, public health, social work and tourism management as well as the Herron School of Art and Design.
Purdue University plans to take control of the schools of engineering and technology, science, nursing and the IU School of Medicine’s medical research programs.
The decision to split IUPUI comes as both universities look to bolster their respective programs and better align their educational offerings with their priorities.
Some school officials believe the split will have a positive impact on the state’s economy in the long run.
“Through this agreement we will unlock the remarkable potential of both institutions to meet the needs of our city and state. I am grateful for our many partners at Purdue University, and to the extensive state and community leadership, that have made today’s progress possible,” said IU President Pamela Whitten.
The split begins June 30.
The shift to operating two distinct institutions will take place at the beginning of 2024. Both schools will construct a campus in Indianapolis.
The split will not affect students currently enrolled at IUPUI.
Both universities agree to work together to ensure a seamless transition for students, faculty and staff.
