Issa Rae Becomes ‘Today’ Show’s First Digital Cover Star

The Today show has tapped Issa Rae as the debut cover star of its newly-launched digital series.

On Tuesday (July 19), Today announced the launch of the morning show’s first-ever digital cover series with Rae as its inaugural star.

Arianna Davis, the Editorial Director of Today, told People, “When we were thinking of people whose impact on the larger culture we wanted to highlight, Issa Rae immediately came to mind.”

“She not only created a hit series for a generation of viewers thirsty for representation but she’s also provided countless opportunities for people of color both in front of and behind the camera, almost singlehandedly transforming the way Hollywood has traditionally worked,” Davis said.

“The world has been eagerly anticipating what’s next from her, and the timing felt especially fitting as Today digital gears up for an exciting new chapter of our own!”

The new series will reign as a digital spin on the traditional print magazine cover story, People reports.

“It’s an exciting time at Today as we’ve been expanding the brand to be truly 360 across broadcast, digital, streaming, and social,” Davis added.

As a part of the digital cover series’ debut, Rae teased her next career moves including an upcoming role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie.

“I was like, ‘This sounds crazy but OK. Let me just read the script,’” Rae told Today about the movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. “When you read the script, you’re like, ‘Oh, I get it!’ It’s very funny, and it’s just very specific to her…working with her was absolutely amazing.”

Following the close of her critically acclaimed show Insecure, Rae’s sophomore project Rap Sh!t is also set to premiere Thursday (July 21) on HBO.
