Indianapolis Public Schools announced it will honor educator Mrs. Manona Martin.
Martin made history as the first African American teacher at IPS James Whitcomb Riley, School #43 following the landmark decision in Brown v. The Board of Education in 1955. IPS is honoring her memory by dedicating a science room in her name at the school Oct. 7 from 1-2 p.m.
As an educator, Martin was known for inspiring students “to be trailblazers and innovative thinkers,” according to a press release. In addition to Martin, a music room will be dedicated to Mrs. Patricia Mack, who served as a music teacher for nearly 40 years.
