Independence Police Release Edited Video of Maria Pike and Destiny Hope’s Killing, Sparking More Questions

Nearly three weeks after the killing of Maria Pike and her two-month-old baby, Destinii Hope, the Independence Police Department has released a highly edited three-minute video, offering a fragmented glimpse into the 20-minute incident. The video, which omits significant portions of the encounter, has only fueled public skepticism and intensified calls for accountability.

The footage shows officers entering the Oval Spring Apartments and briefly speaking with Maria, who is seen holding her baby in a closet. According to the police department’s accompanying text, officers asked Maria to put the baby down multiple times before she exited the closet and moved to a bed. The video later depicts Maria grabbing a knife—but abruptly ends before the double murder took place.

“It is unconscionable that, after the trauma the families of Baby Destinii and Maria have endured, the Independence Police Department would release a highly edited bodycam footage of this tragedy…” the Law Enforcement Accountability Project said in a public statement about the footage release. “We are again reminded of the complete lack of respect for victims of police violence, for those suffering from mental health issues, and for the cruel and inhumane treatment shown to certain members of our community.”

The selective, highly edited and narrative-driven release has drawn sharp criticism from community members, who say it raises more questions than it answers. “I still stand by the fact that there were other options,” apartment property manager Gavin Delaney told The Defender. “She’s tiny—that guy was towering over her, and she was holding the baby.”

“I believe this could have and should have been handled differently,” wrote one social media user, “you can see in the closet that she clearly is having a mental crisis. They should have pulled back till others came to intervene. Just sad all the way around.” Another expressed similar sentiment saying “They should have waited for the mental health response team THAT WAS ON SCENE to interact with her. Postpartum depression, anxiety & psychosis is a very real thing.”

The Independence Police Department has refused to provide further details about what occurred after the video ends, including when and where the shots were fired, how many, what officers said, or any actions taken to provide medical aid to Maria or Destiny.

The release of the video comes as community tensions remain. A rally for justice, organized by the Kansas City Law Enforcement Accountability Project, is planned for Sunday, December 1st, outside Independence Police Department headquarters. Organizers and family members continue to demand answers and accountability for what they call a senseless and avoidable tragedy.

“We hope the community will not be deterred by the gaslighting by law enforcement and will join the families in their demand for the release of the entire bodycam video, a transparent and thorough investigation, a review and transformation of department policies, and accountability for all responsible for the deaths of Maria and baby Destiny,” they concluded in their statement following the release of the edited footage.

The release of the heavily edited bodycam footage also reveals that the Ring camera footage obtained by The Defender in our initial reporting likely captured events following the fatal shooting of Maria and Destiny, not as the entered Maria and Destiny’s apartment. The Ring footage shows officers storming the apartment complex with rifles drawn, which aligns with testimony from Bug, the resident of that apartment. Bug directly recounted how officers raided their home with assault weapons drawn while officers screamed at Bug, while Bug yelled back that they had the wrong apartment.

As public pressure mounts, The Defender remains committed to uncovering the full truth behind the horrific events of November 7. We are also reminded of the testimony of apartment manager Delaney in our earlier reporting, which includes aspects omitted from the edited police video;

“Everything you’ve showed me is accurate” Gavin Delaney, owner of the apartment complex told The Defender. “It’s all accurate. I am the assistant property manager of the complex and was there in Mitchell’s apartment minutes before shots rang out. I stumbled upon the initial incident while the grandmother was on the phone with 911. I just wanted to add, that while in the apartment, Mitchell was essentially forced into trying to get the baby out of the room. It started with the cop asking mitchell if he’d help, and his response was I don’t want to be involved, I’m not an aggressor I don’t want to escalate things. The cops that responded, were muscular/large individuals. You’re telling me they couldn’t wrestle that tiny woman who had a baby and allegedly a knife? Shots should never have been fired in the first place. When we were standing inside the police tape, they were very rude to the family members (sister ashley and grandfather brian) who were outside. It was truly shocking how fast things turned. When they were talking to both parties in the apartment everything was cordial and there was no reason for escalation. They even had a co responder for mental health and she didn’t even go into the apartment which very much could’ve changed the outcome.

This is a developing story.
