GISD announces Paid Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Summer Program

Local partnerships bring new opportunity for Genesee County juniors and seniors

FLINT – The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) Career Technical Education (CTE) Program, Michigan Laborers’ Training Institute (MLTAI) and the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) announce a new paid opportunity for Genesee County high school juniors and seniors. Students accepted into the program will have the opportunity to earn $15 per hour and full union benefits while completing on-the-job training.

For the first time, all Genesee County high school junior and senior students can begin working in a skilled trade pre-apprenticeship program prior to graduation. All hours worked in this program will count toward future union trade apprenticeships. The State of Michigan has only recently opened up the opportunity for students under 18 to begin working in skilled trades under a structured pre-apprenticeship program.

The GISD has been working with various unions to create this program for over five years.

“As building, industry and infrastructure continue to grow in Genesee County, we see a huge need for more skilled trade workers, and we are happy to set students up for a well-paid future career while they are still in high school,” said Diana Allard, executive director of Career and Technical Education at GISD.

LiUNA will host a Student Signing Night for the 18 students who were accepted into the first class of apprentices at 6 p.m. on May 4 . at the LiUNA Training Center, 11155 Beardslee Road, Perry.  While this summer session is full, the opportunity is expected to be offered again next spring for juniors or seniors in summer 2024.

“Our new partnership with GISD will provide these students with real-world work experience and life skills that will provide each participant with a solid foundation to enter LIUNA Training of Michigan’s U.S. Department of Labor-Recognized Apprenticeship program and a successful career as a construction craft Laborer,” said Daryl Gallant, Director of Training at Michigan Laborers’ Training & Apprenticeship Institute.

“It is a great opportunity for these students to go on and lead rewarding and productive careers,” Gallant added.
