Detroit is on the rise not only for businesses and opportunities but the city is uplifting its youth as well!
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan youth talent development program launched back in 2020 is set to expand with a $300,000 grant from General Motors that will give Metro Detroit kids hands-on experience in design.
The grant was announced at BGCSM’s 2023 Automotive Golf Classic earlier this month.
The new Design Industry Club will introduce young people to different ways design can be used in the workforce. The program will implement animation, graphic design, illustration, interior design, automotive design, and fashion design.
BGCSM is the first Boys & Girls Clubs location in the nation to provide the Industry Club model for youth and entrepreneurs and will employ hundreds of Detroit youth each year, ages 14 and up!
The program will give young people the economic, cultural and social capital needed to become college, career and startup ready. They will gain real-world experience learning about business.
The club will also host field trips and masterclasses for more than 250 Detroit youth in the first year. Sixty students will be chosen to receive paid workforce opportunities in fashion design, automotive design and interior design.
Since BGCSM’s initial launch of its industry club program three years ago, the nonprofit has expanded its list of clubs each year since and now offers paid workforce experience for young people interested in pursuing careers in a total of six Industry Clubs: the Risk Management Industry Club, the Sports and Esports Industry Club, the Entertainment Industry Club, the Urban Planning Industry Club, the Fashion Industry Club, and the Technology Industry Club.
The Design Industry Club is set to launch in July.
Youth who are interested in future Design Industry Club opportunities can sign up for the waitlist to be notified of the next application period here.
