Your children will be out of school soon. Already, kids are spending more time on computers and computer devices than ever before. Some kids may be vacationing this summer, while others will continue to spend a lot of time watching tv, playing video games, or on the computer/phone for hours each day.

As parents, you may wonder if too much computer use is affecting your kid’s eyes. Eye doctors who specialize in children’s vision will say that sustained computer use puts kids at risk for nearsightedness and focusing problems. Computer use, especially among youngsters whose eyes are still developing, may be the culprit for younger kids becoming nearsighted so early.

Glare and the blue lights coming from computers and phones also puts more stress on the eyes than reading paper books. This easily happens because kids hold their phones at close range and for hours without taking a break. Kids never want to admit when their eyes feel tired. This causes the eye fatigue leading to excessive eyestrain, dryness, and other symptoms.

To prevent eyes fatigue, here are some suggestions:

• Blue light filter lenses are beneficial to reduce eye fatigue from digital devices.

• Sit at an appropriate distance from the screen (phone or computer monitor)

• Limit the amount of screen time a child has per day to less than 2 hours.

• Look for signs and symptoms of eye strain — red eye, rubbing eyes, squinting, or complaints of headaches or blurred vision.

• Plan to have an eye exam soon
