Dolton trustees approved a resolution calling for a federal investigation into Tiffany Henyard, the flashy, self-proclaimed “Super Mayor” of the South Suburban Chicago village.
The special session was held at a Dolton Park District facility because the trustees and clerks were denied access keys to the Village Hall, the usual venue for such a proceeding.
Senior Trustee Jason House said the Village Board has evidence that Henyard misappropriated village funds and credit cards, made unauthorized payments to vendors, withheld payment for approved invoices, and illegally stamped the village clerk’s name on payments.
Additionally, Henyard was accused of issuing checks without proper countersignatures.
A resolution outlining these allegations and others will be forwarded to authorities, including the Cook County State’s Attorney, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, the Cook County Sheriff, and the Illinois State Board of Elections for investigation.
This development only ratchets the scrutiny on Mayor Henyard, whose alleged activities have drawn national headlines.
A damning investigation by Chicago news outlet WGN found that the mayor and her allies had taken first-class flights, dined at high-end restaurants, and stayed at lavish hotels, all on the taxpayer’s dime.
Moreover, it was revealed that public funds were used for Henyard’s namesake foundation, which is said to help people battling cancer. Instead, those monies went to cover charity-sponsored meals and hotel stays, according to reports. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office had recently ordered “Tiffany Henyard Cares” to stop soliciting donations.
In the wake of these accusations swirling around its mayor is the debt-ridden village of about 21,000 she was elected to lead. Trustee Norwood said the village, about 20 miles south of Downtown Chicago, is $7 million in debt.
Dolton’s money troubles are so bad that police cars are on the verge of being repossessed because car loan payments have not been made. Plus, some vendors who have rendered services to the village have not been paid nor had their calls returned.
Meanwhile, drivers who take the Bishop Ford Freeway or I-57 have likely seen the massive taxpayer-funded billboards bearing Henyard’s face.
At the time of this writing, a line in the bio section of Henyard’s verified Instagram account read, “The Most Powerful Woman in The Southland of Chicago.”
