Day of the Girl: Black Women Visit Capitol For Grit, Glam & Guts Day of Play

For all Black girls and women, or anyone who knows a Black girl, loves a Black girl, or wants to celebrate a Black girl: join the inaugural Grit, Glam & Guts’ Black Girl Day of Play event from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 25 at the lawn of the State Capitol Building in Lansing.

Women of all ages can attend the Black Girl Day of Play day where thousands of women from Lansing and across the state will experience the joy of play on the state’s Capitol lawn. Together, the event will celebrate Black girlhood through dozens of “play” stations, such as life-size Connect4, life-size Jenga, basketball, and family activities. There will be food trucks, vendors, and a community art project.

Through Black Girl Day of Play, the organization plans to promote health & wellness among Black women & girls, foster support & community for Black women & girls, and recognize the power of Black women-centered events.

“This is a day for Black women and girls to just have fun,” said Grit, Glam and Guts Founder Cameo King. “Why? Because Black girls and women deserve joy, and that’s what I want us to have, coming out of the pandemic, the civil uprisings, the transitions of power: to know that we are worth it, and to have a community that supports that joy.”

Black Girl Day of Play is the first of its kind in the country. It is made possible through the tremendous support of partners including State Representative Sarah Anthony, Walmart, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, DRM International Learning Center, and MConnexions Marketing Agency, and The Good Girl Podcast.
