David A. Arnold died unexpectedly on Wednesday (September 7) at the age of 54.

The comedian’s family announced his passing in a statement released to the Los Angeles Times, explaining that he died “from natural causes.”

“It is with great sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of our husband, father, brother and friend, David A. Arnold,” the statement began. “David passed away peacefully today in his home and doctors have ruled the cause of death due to natural causes. Please keep our family in prayer and respect our privacy at this time as we are all shocked and devastated by this loss.”

The comedian died just three dates into his comedy tour, Pace Ya Self. Hours before his death was announced, a video of one of his comedy sketches was posted to his on Instagram.

In addition to being a standup comedian — Arnold’s second Netflix standup special, It Ain’t for the Weak, debuted in July — he was also the creator, showrunner and executive producer of Nickelodeon’s That Girl Lay Lay. Arnold is also credited for writing episodes for Fuller House, Meet The Browns, and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, to name a few.

The late comedian is survived by his wife Julie and daughters Anna Grace and Ashlyn Elizabeth.
