Friday night the defending state 3A champions Eastside Catholic Crusaders (0-0) took on the Grant Union Pacers (0-1) of Sacramento, California in their first crack of action on the 2019 season.

After a sluggish start on offense, Eastside Catholic senior running back Gio Ursino set things in motion with a 75-yard burst of speed for a touchdown. Senior cornerback Ayden Hector followed suit as he scored on a picture perfect pick 6 taking it back 46 yards for a touchdown as the Crusaders jumped out to an early 12-0 first quarter lead.

The Crusaders were hampered by mistakes throughout the game totaling just under 70 yards in penalties but weathered the storm throughout the 2nd half resulting in 47-20 final.

“We knew they would come out and take shots deep,” said former NFL cornerback, Super Bowl Champion and Eastside Catholic Defensive Backs Coach Jeron Johnson. “Unfortunately they didn’t have their starting QB tonight so we wanted to take away the run, stay on top and limit the big plays.”

Ursino led all rushers with 13 carries for 119 yards and four touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Keionn Palmer of the Grant Union Pacers led all receivers with 6 grabs for 131 yards and a touchdown.
