Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) is announcing new start times for the 2023-2024 school year for select schools, as presented by Superintendent Wright and agreed upon by the Board of Education during the latest Committee of the Whole Meeting April 19. This information was also shared during the Board of Education Business Meeting April 24.

After experiencing significant driver shortages, CPS must reduce the number of routes to improve efficiency, safety, on-time status and level of service for families. Based on current routes, and looking at forecasts for next fall, the District has 36 more routes than drivers available, which is causing route stacking and some students getting to school late in the morning and home in the afternoon.

After careful consideration, the District developed multiple solutions to streamline bus routes while maintaining healthy start times for high schools and providing transportation to students who live one mile or more from their neighborhood school, as required per board policy. The options and scenarios presented to the Board were based on feedback and discussions gathered from numerous roundtable community meetings, survey results, transportation consultants, bus contractors and school leadership. After gaining consensus from the Board of Education, the District is moving forward with a paired two-tier model with the least degree of impact to the overall number of CPS schools. This change also provides a 70-minute window between school start times allowing bus drivers to complete a route with enough time to transport another group of students to school. These new times are paired at 7:40 a.m. and 8:50 a.m., and 8 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. Additionally, the District is recommending new school start times for some non-CPS schools that receive transportation from the District as required by state law. In an effort to get students to school on time, CPS will continue dialogue and coordination with non-CPS schools to gain adoption.

New start times for schools also will change dismissal times for schools. For a full list of all changes, including schools with changes that are less than 15-minutes, please visit: https://www.cps-k12.org/newstarttimes2324
