Chicago Rapper G Herbo Could Face Years in Prison After Pleading Guilty

Rapper Herbert Wright, better known as G Herbo, agreed to plead guilty to federal fraud charges.

The Chicago rapper was accused of using stolen identities to fund a luxurious lifestyle, including private jets, a Jamaican villa, acquiring “designer puppies,” a personal chef and other extravagant purchases. Atop his free-spending, Wright reportedly lied to a federal agent regarding the allegations.

G Herbo isn’t alone in this case. Authorities indicted him and five other men for conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

One of those connections is a promoter and alleged mastermind of fraudulent activities, Antonio Strong. Wright’s relationship with Strong has him in more trouble after the rapper denied his connection to the promoter.

As reported by the ​​Chicago Tribune, “Wright and Strong were in frequent direct contact with each other, including phone conversations, text messages, and Instagram messages, the charges stated. However, “Wright falsely said he’d never provided Strong any money, never received anything of value from Strong, and had no direct relationship with Strong. In fact, since at least 2016, Wright had received valuable goods from Strong,” including those beyond the jets, cars, travel and fashion.

According to the Tribune, the elaborate fraud scheme, which accumulated up to $1.5M in charges, carries up to 20 years in prison.

Still, under federal sentencing guidelines, Wright would likely face a term in the two- to three-year range. Those details are still being worked out.

For his part, Wright vehemently denied wrongdoing when he was charged.

Wright stood firm in his convictions against the charges of stolen goods and services in a song released in 2020. “Ask about me, I ain’t never been a fraud,” he raps in the two-minute video titled “Statement,” released on social media. “I worked hard from the start; in my city, I’m a god, (expletive).”

While Wright’s lyrics are commendable, what authorities allege paints a different picture.

Most recently, Wright got the attention of law enforcement due to having firearms and “248 grams of cannabis in the car, with an estimated value of $1,488,” according to police reports.

After being charged with a misdemeanor, court records confirmed that Wright was bonded out of police custody the following day and remained on bond for the federal fraud case in Massachusetts.

More information regarding the case will unfold after G Herbo’s plea hearing before a U.S. district judge, tentatively set for July 27.
