Cliff Albright and LaTosha Brown, Co-Founders of Black Voters Matter issue statement following the Presidential debate
Last night we witnessed a good, old-fashioned @$$ whooping.
Kamala Harris displayed strength and compassion in the face of chaos and division. She demonstrated once again that Black women know how to handle a bully like Trump.
In contrast, Trump spewed lies and ramblings that showed us that he is unhinged and unfit to lead.
But last night was not just about personality differences. The policy agendas of Harris and Trump are in stark opposition. Donald Trump has no plan to address the growing concerns of Black voters. In fact, his tariff “plan” would raise taxes on Black households, his “concept of a plan” to dismantle Obamacare would end affordable healthcare, and his attacks on DEI and affirmative action threaten Black economic well-being. Black voters deserve more from government than racist policies that have historically denied us access to wealth and opportunity in this country.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has a plan that will address the increasing wealth gap found by expanding home ownership, lowering grocery costs, investing in small businesses, and protecting civil rights.
Furthermore, VP Harris clearly recited Donald Trump’s history of racism with respect to the Exonerated 5, his refusal to give housing to Black people, and his “good folks on both sides” when referring to white supremacists. And she called out Trump’s Project 2025, which threatens to undo civil rights protection in voting, education, finance, and the environment. His racist policies must be stopped in November.
There is still work to be done toward reparative justice for millions of marginalized people domestically, or better foreign policy related to the war in Gaza. However, the choice is clear who will be a better ally for Black voters in the White House: VP Kamala Harris. We see the existential danger of policies and politics that seek to take us back. We will not go. This is why “ We Fight Back!”
So now we must turn to the real work in our communities of making sure everyone is clear about what’s at stake in this election and empowered to have their votes counted. If we stay focused and fight back, not only will we win in November, we will continue to win beyond November.
