Black Voters Matter Issues Statement Following Senator Cory Booker’s Historic Filibuster in Opposition to Trump Administration Policies

Today, we witnessed a historic feat in the fight for freedom from tyranny and the abuse of power by the Trump administration. For more than 24 hours, Senator Cory Booker occupied the Senate floor in a marathon protest of the Trump administration’s racist policies. This individual act of resistance ultimately broke Strom Thurman’s 68-year record.

In 1957, Strom Thurman, a racist senator from South Carolina went on record attacking the civil rights bill in the longest filibuster in U.S. history. In defense of civil rights, free speech, and economic justice, Senator Booker countered that legacy with an impassioned, substantive argument, signaling to Black communities everywhere that we do have the power to fight back.

This moment in our history calls for an unyielding movement of resistance. We are calling on Black people to be informed on the issues, stay engaged in their communities, and Fight Back against systems that perpetuate racism and inequality.
