Black Voters Matter Issues Statement Following Recent Attacks Targeting Voter Registration

Yesterday, in another attempt to distract voters, Trump signed an executive order to upend the U.S. voter registration process by creating restrictive ‘proof of citizenship’ measures designed to prevent voters from casting a ballot. He is trying to federalize the individual state’s voter registration process by bullying them to comply with threats of federal funding cuts and prosecution for election crimes. We know this is unlawful and is unlikely to move forward without Congress.

These federal attacks are part of a broader strategy to suppress Black voters that are also playing out at the state level. In Georgia, election officials recently announced plans to cancel more than 455,000 voter registrations this summer, making it one of the largest voter purges in U.S. history. We anticipate that Republican-led states across the country will move to purge voters from the rolls in the coming months.

These ongoing attacks on voting rights make local elections more crucial than ever. We urge Black voters to take action by staying informed and engaged in local politics by checking your voter registration status and connecting with grassroots organizations working in your communities. We know that real change and resistance begins at the local level, where our collective power has always been rooted.
