We are deeply disturbed by what we witnessed during a post-inauguration speech by Elon Musk. The outright fascist salute should serve as a reminder that Neo-Nazi ideologies are a growing threat to Black communities, yet some still downplay their relevance by thinking they only affect Jewish people.
This kind of misinformation is extremely dangerous. Groups tied to Neo-Nazism have been responsible for racially motivated violence against Black people spanning decades. Recent attacks include the 2022 mass shooting that killed 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY, the shooting at Dollar General in Jacksonville, FL that killed 3 in 2023, and the massacre in Charleston, SC that killed 9 inside of a house of worship. These racist ideologies don’t just cause emotional harm, they lead to real-world violence.
It’s worth noting Musk’s ties to Nazism, his maternal grandparents were reportedly members of the Nazi party who moved to South Africa, apparently because apartheid was the next best thing to an Aryan Third Reich.
Lastly, any media outlets that have either ignored the salute, or tried to argue that it was something other than what it was, are proving to be complicit in this country’s slide toward fascism.
As white nationalism rises, we must recognize the threat it poses to the safety of Black communities and understand that this issue is ours to fight as well.
