ATLANTA – Tomorrow, March 9, 2023, Black Voters Matter will participate in the National Day of Action and stand in solidarity with Community Movement Builders, Movement for Black Lives, New Georgia Project and a host of other social justice organizations to oppose the development of “Cop City”, which is a militarized urban warfare training facility in Atlanta.
During the national day of action, we will march and lift our voices to let Mayor Andre Dickens and the Atlanta city council know that we see the investment and development of cop city as a breach of the community’s trust and a direct threat to the safety and well-being of its Black residents. The resources dedicated to this development should be used to address issues such as healthcare access, housing, food insecurity and infrastructure in Black and Marginalized communities.
The day of action will call for the City of Atlanta’s immediate divestment from the “Cop City” project and a return of those lands to the community for a use to be determined by the surrounding Black community. We also demand that the court immediately set bonds for those who have been wrongfully overcharged with domestic terrorism. Indeed, these overzealous charges against peaceful protestors expressing their first amendment rights should be dismissed.
We hope that other people will join us tomorrow at 6:00pm at the King Center, to not only voice opposition to the development of “Cop City” in Atlanta, but to make it clear that we do not want to see “Cop Cities” developed in any other city in this country.
