by Eric “E Da Ref” Hunter

It’s been an honor to write for The San Francisco Bay View National Black Newspaper because it has been one of the main media platforms that supports political prisoners and prisoners of war for over 40 years. This newspaper gave a voice to people who have been incarcerated, isolated, rejected and forgotten about.

In Oakland, just as any other ghettos in America, we have been severely affected by mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex. This is why I’m so passionate about this subject.

I have so many loved ones trapped in these concentration camp correctional facilities, in some of the most inhumane living conditions known to man, due to the modern day slave roundup known as the “War on Drugs”. Some of the people who are locked up behind bars and buried alive under concrete and steel, are freedom fighting soldiers of the Black Liberation Struggle. They have been targeted, framed and captured because of their political beliefs.

These repressive attacks on the movement didn’t stop in the 1960s and 70s; it’s still going on today. I would like to shed light on the new generation’s Black freedom fighting organization efforts to support political prisoners.

The Black Defense Committee is an alliance of Black Power groups that moves in the spirit of the Black Panthers of the 1960s. The committee is primarily concerned with political prisoners – both old and new – and unjustly imprisoned Black People. It developed out of the Black Power Coalition that formed during the process of two mass mobilization armed demonstrations in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Natchez, Mississippi, in commemoration of the race riot massacres that occurred in these areas.

The demonstration was to advocate armed self defense against white supremacist terrorism and vow to never allow massacres like these to ever happen again!

The Black Defense Committee will cover other diverse political activities when needed,

such as armed demonstrations to back up demands to end torture of political prisoners and prisoners of war. It will also include letter writing campaigns, commissary help, phone banks, legal assistance, lawyers/ lawsuits, Court Watch program, medical aid, birthday cards, books to prison programs, and helping children who may have parents who are incarcerated.

The research and study of compassionate pardon and clemency releases will also be included in the operations of the Black Defense Committee. One of the major objectives is to raise awareness of political prisoners and to expose the U.S Government’s human rights violations, such as the cruel and unusual punishment with the use of sensory deprivation chambers or the foul living conditions in the prison system.

There will also be educational workshops on the history of the prison movement including the teachings of George Jackson, Attica resistance and Black August.
