Ask Ashlee: How do I tell my sister her boyfriend gives me the creeps?

Dear Ask Ashlee,

My sister’s boyfriend has been making me feel very uncomfortable lately. He is always complimenting me in a way that is usually about my curves or my body. There have been plenty of times that I have caught him staring at me, and I will look to see if my sister notices, but she seems oblivious to what is going on. My sister is like my best friend, she is 10 years older than me, but she has always looked out for me and has been nothing but protective and loving like any big sister should be over their younger sister. Should I tell her that her boyfriend makes me uncomfortable? Or should I spare us all the discomfort and just continue to ignore him?

The Little Sister

Dear Little Sister,

So, here’s the thing, I have a little sister myself and I will always want her to come to me about anything and everything. I think if you and your sister are as close as you say, then she will want the same for you. Even if this means that she has to have a difficult conversation with her boyfriend, so be it. The important thing is that you should not be in a situation where a man is making you feel uncomfortable by the things he says to you or the way he stares at you. You should not have to silence the intuition you feel by his behavior towards you. I strongly suggest you have a conversation with her and see how things play out from there. If he continues this behavior, stay away from him. You can’t make your sister stop seeing him, but you can minimize his access to you. I hope this helps!

Love & Light,

Ash
