The sorority was founded at Howard University (Washington, D. C.) on Jan. 15, 1908, by a group of 16 students led by Ethel Hedgemon-Lyle. According to the AKA website, Hedgemon-Lyle “dreamed of creating a support network for women with like minds who would come together for mutual uplift and coalescence of their talents and strengths for the benefit of others.”
