Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine won his bid for re-election Tuesday, beating out Republican opponent Corey Stewart in the 2018 midterm election.

The Associated Press called the race for the incumbent Democrat less than an hour after the polls closed at 7 p.m. With more than 70 percent of precincts reporting, Kaine led Stewart by a 54 percent to 44 percent margin.

Kaine, who lives in Richmond with his wife and three children, is said to be gearing up for a presidential run in 2020.

The former Virginia governor served as Hillary Clinton’s running mate in her failed presidential bid in 2016.
