Former Planning Commish Shawyn Patterson-Howard Runs For Mayor Of Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon – Former Planning Commissioner Shawyn Patterson-Howard announced she is officially throwing her hat in the 2019 Mount Vernon mayoral race.


“I am running,” Patterson-Howard shared with Black Westchester late Monday night on the eve of the Mount Vernon Democratic Committee Convention. “This is truly a breaking development,” she added when we contacted her to confirm her candidacy.

Shawyn Patterson-Howard serves as the President and CEO of the YMCA of Yonkers and while she didn’t have a press conference to announce, she launch her Facebook page for her candidacy hours before we spoke Monday night. (see Facebook Video below).

Mayor Richard Thomas, on Thursday, March 17, 2016 announced the appointment of Shawyn Patterson Howard to serve as Commissioner of Planning and Community Development and Executive Director of the Mount Vernon Urban Renewal Agency. She served until December 2016 when she departed after a difference of opinion with Mayor Thomas.

Shawyn will face her former boss, Mayor Richard W. Thomas, Council President Andre Wallace, Councilwoman Delia Farquharson and jail attendant Carlo Jean-Baptiste, Sr., in the upcoming Democratic Primary, Tuesday, June 25th.

Others rumored to be running for Mayor of Mount Vernon include former Mayor Ernest D. Davis, two-time congressional candidate Derickson Lawrence, former Mount Vernon Police Commissioner and 2017 City Council Candidate Clyde Isley, who informed Black Westchester he is only running if nominated by the party at the convention. None of the other potential candidates have confirmed or denied their candidacy when asked by Black Westchester.

The city Democratic committee is expected to endorse its candidate for mayor, at the Mount Vernon Democratic Convention, Tuesday, February 19th at 7:00PM at their headquarters located at 1 Park Avenue. Candidates will start collecting signatures, Tuesday, February 26th, to get on the ballot for the primary.
