SACRAMENTO — Terry McMillan, a New York Times best-selling author of “Waiting to Exhale” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” which were made into award-winning major motion pictures is returning to Sacramento.

McMillan, who has spoken in Sacramento on several occasions, will appear again on Wednesday, July 11 to participate in the Oak Park Speaker Series event at the Historic Guild Theater.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m., the event starts at 6:00 p.m., and is followed by a book signing at Underground Books at 7:00 p.m.

McMillan, 65, is a strong African American woman who has penned nine books, practically all best sellers. She emerged on the bookshelf with the New York Times bestseller, “Mama.” Her books are told from a woman’s point of view that relates to all women of color, especially the Black woman.

Her bestselling book, “Waiting To Exhale,” was indirectly fictional about her college experience, she told the audience. The book was turned into a 1995 romance film that starred Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett and made $82 million at the box office off a $16 million budget.
